On Life in Austin

Either the water here in Austin has improved dramatically, or I've just started to appreciate water which tastes like dirt.

In honor of the newfound joys of drinking Austin's water (instead of the bottled variety), I've decided to make a list of things I like about Austin, and a couple of things I thought I'd hate, but don't.

The People

Every day I meet new people. All of them different (some for the better, and some for worse), but mostly just interesting. Lots of really creative people here, people who make things, make music, make art.

Even better than the daily meeting of new people is the chance to get to know the same people I see every day a little better. I've had the opportunity to spend a little time with my classmates socially, and I'm enjoying getting to hear about their lives.

There are nine photo-js in their first year of the program. We all have different backgrounds, and really different esthetic ideas, but they are all turning out some really great work. Last weekend I drove out west a bit with one of them and had some fun shooting a friend of hers. It wasn't the most productive Saturday I've had, but I managed to finish my portrait assignment and shoot a fire. On the plus side, I had a REALLY great time, just being out of the city and shooting.

Some of the students in my Visual Design lab are incredibly talented. The final project for that class is a hand-bound book, and I can't wait to see what some of them are going to produce.

The Buses

I *heart* public transportation. There's really nothing else to say about it. I drove basically once a week, to go to church.

The Traffic

This one definitely falls into the "I don't hate it as much as I though I would" category, largely because of the aforementioned buses. Of course, Friday it did take 20 minutes to traverse the 3 miles or so of Mopac from 38th to Far West, but it's normally not that busy. I tend to come and go at odd hours, so that helps.

The Photo Lab

It's big. A bunch of film rooms, 10 enlargers, and three computer labs. Too bad the back one is like a meat locker. Speaking of lockers, we have them. In the photo lab. See, lots of reasons to love the photo lab.

Ok, that's all for this list for now.

Goodnight.
